Training hub. Two domains, two reference bibles, six progressive courses. A single entry point to develop solid skills in immersive experience design.
Two Domains, One Continuum
Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) sit at the two extremes of the Milgram & Kishino continuum (1994) — from the enriched real environment to the entirely virtual environment. Interaction design in both spaces shares common foundations (presence, spatial affordances, multimodal feedback) and challenges specific to each technology.
This hub covers both domains in a complementary way. You can choose a specialty or follow both paths.
Reference Documents (Bibles)
AR Bible — Interaction Design in Augmented Reality
→ /en/apprendre/design-interaction-ar/bible/ content/cours/design-interaction-ar/BIBLE.en.md
Complete reference: definitions (Azuma 1997), history (1965→2024), principles (affordances, presence, anchoring, comfort), techniques (near/far interaction, UI types), tools (ARKit, ARCore, MRTK, WebXR, A-Frame, AR.js, 8thWall, comparative hardware 2026), case studies, 47-term glossary, sourced bibliography.
VR Bible — Interaction Design in Virtual Reality

Recommended Paths
"Discovering XR" path (beginner, no prerequisites)
→ AR N1 → VR N1 Total duration: 24–30h Ideal for: design, art, communication students; curious people without technical experience. Outcome: two functional WebXR prototypes (AR on smartphone, VR in desktop browser).
"Interactive XR designer" path (intermediate)
→ AR N1 → AR N2 → VR N2 Total duration: 44–55h Ideal for: interactive design / UX students; creative professionals looking to integrate XR into their practice. Outcome: two tested mediation experiences with real users, SUS mastery, spatial UI and sound design.
"Creative XR developer" path (advanced)
→ AR N1 → AR N2 → AR N3 or VR N1 → VR N2 → VR N3 Total duration: 48–59h per path Ideal for: creative developers, digital artists seeking to produce exhibition-level works. Outcome: exhibition-tested experience with IPQ, operator README, production readiness.
"Architect of immersive spaces" path (complete)
→ AR N1 → VR N1 → AR N2 → VR N2 → AR N3 → VR N3 Total duration: 96–118h Ideal for: creative studios, R&D teams, design schools looking to train complete profiles. Outcome: complete AR+VR portfolio, mastery of both technologies, advanced research protocols.
